09 JULY 2021: PIXIE LOTT – Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)

Just 18 at the time, Pixie Lott proved she meant business when she debuted with this ridiculously catchy bop.

Oh we loved a good uh-oh in parentheses back in the noughties didn’t we. And understandably so, because it’s a pretty fail-safe hook for a pop song. The team behind Pixie Lott knew all about that when she burst onto the scene back in 2009 with her debut single ‘Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh), which shot straight to number 1. I think it’s easy to forget just how good this one was. The smoky melody and retro styling borrowed aesthetically from artists like Duffy and Amy Winehouse, who were of course enjoying massive success at the time. The production and lyrics were just that bit more forward-thinking though, with the handclaps, electronic sounds and Lott’s youthful energy all combining to make this one of the defining tracks of that summer.
