12 MARCH 2021: AMY STUDT – Misfit
As far as early-noughties teen pop-rock goes, Amy Studt’s ‘Misfit’ is one of the best.
British singer-songwriter Amy Studt achieved more than most before she was 18, with her debut album ‘False Smiles’ and its singles all enjoying big chart success from 2002 – 2004. The standout from the era is undoubtedly ‘Misfit’, a smart and melodic ode to being yourself and standing out from the crowd, which came long before that mantra became the status quo. The instrumentation is quintessential of the pop-rock trends of the time, but what really makes this one pop is the range of expression in her voice. The way she sends withering putdowns to her detractors in the verses, then rises to the power of that singalong chorus is so engaging, and helps make this track a true evergreen.
