One of the defining tracks of the quintessential noughties R’n’B sound, Ne-Yo’s debut single ‘So Sick’ is an enduring classic.

Ne-Yo was one of the most prolific and successful purveyors of electronic R’n’B in the late noughties and early 2010s, but before he became known for turning up the tempo, he first made his name with ballads like ‘So Sick’. From the outset, he established himself as an insightful songwriter, picking out everyday moments that signify the pain of a break-up in unexpected ways, and his smooth vocals made the delivery of these sentiments even more moving. The Stargate production is the final piece in the puzzle which makes this such a stunning track, with those harp motifs creating a beautifully mournful atmosphere which reflects the lyrics perfectly. A deserved classic.
