ZOE WEES – Control

13 JULY 2020: ZOE WEES – Control

New German talent Zoe Wees has, without a doubt, one of the most unique and emotional voices I’ve heard in a long time. ‘Control’ is a stunning track.

Every now and again, a ballad will come along out of nowhere and stop me in my tracks with its insane beauty. ‘Control’ by German singer-songwriter Zoe Wees is one such song. Having a history of sharing covers on social media, she’s an artist who clearly knows the musical direction she wants to head in; indeed, this track is perfectly pitched in the same sort of space as artists like Lewis Capaldi and James Bay who notably use soaring choruses to convey powerful emotions. Zoe Wees does exactly that in the poignant ‘I don’t wanna looooooose control‘ cry of strength which constitutes this track’s main hook. The lyrics come from a very deep place – namely her childhood struggle with rolandic epilepsy – but the fact this very specific personal experience can translate into such a universally relatable piece of art is a testament to Zoe Wees’ sublimely expressive vocal talent. This is a truly special piece of music, and an artist to keep an eye on in future.

I’ve also linked the brand new NOTD remix below, which is a really sensitive reimagining of the track, giving it more of a poppy kick and a catchy drop, but maintaining the raw emotional appeal of the original.
